Hiromu Sugiyama

I am a Research Assistant at the Waseda Institute of Political Economy (WINPEC) at Waseda University, and an Analytics Engineer at VETA Inc. in Tokyo.

Before this, I received an M.A. in Public Policy with a Certificate in Research Methods (MACRM) from the University of Chicago, where my work focused on voting behavior, political accountability, and quantitative methodology, and a B.S. in Human-Centered Design Engineering from the University of Washington, where I studied political bias in generative AI and quantitative and qualitative research methodology for evaluating generative AI systems.

I am broadly interested in political accountability, voting systems, and the use of conjoint experiments to study political behavior. I am especially interested in how bureaucrats are held accountable, how multiple equilibria can arise in political institutions, and how formal and quantitative methods — from causal inference to survey experiments — can be applied to questions of governance and elections.
